L' Aranciera is situated in Capri's historical convent of Santa Teresa, in the wing which overlooks one of the most impressive views over the bay of Naples.High vaulted ceilings, magnificent views, and the vicinity to Capri's Piazzetta, Via Camerelle and Via le Botteghe represent the highpoints of this hidden treasure. Over the years the Santa Teresa convent has been used to different tasks.
It was founded in the seventeenth century by Madre Serafina di Dio, a Carmelite nun of the Theresian order, and originally included a church and a female convent, situated at the heart of sixteenth century Capri.
When Napoleon forced Ferdinand the I out of Naples in 1806, Capri became a military base from which to fend off the incoming English fleet. In this context, Murat took control of the island and transformed the convent into a military barrack.
As the newborn Reign of Italy dismissed its assets to raise finances, the Ferraro family purchased the convent in 1878. It became home to numerous families, some of which continue to live in its northern and southern wings. The Southern wing of the convent was donated to the church by Rodriguez d’Acri in memory of his lost brother, Giacinto.
Since 1996, a lasting process started to protect the historical value of the Northern wing.
Here lies the Aranciera of the Teresiane, which faces the bay of Naples, and looks onto the mighty Vesuvius.
